Birkenhead native Barbara Steele is an English film actress and producer. She is well known for starring the Italian Gothaic horror film of the 1960s. The performance that made her famous was the dual role of Princess Asa Vajda and Katia Vajda in Mario Bava’s Black Sunday (1960).
Steele also had supporting parts in the 81⁄2 (1963) of Federico Fellini and appeared on television in the Dark Shadows miniseries of 1991. In the 2010s Steele was featured in several films, including a leading role in The Butterfly Room (2012) and supporting role in the Lost River of Ryan Gosling (2014).

Steele had guest roles with Patrick McGoohan on various British TV shows including the spy drama, Danger Man. In 1960, in the “Daughter of Illusion” episode of the ABC series, Adventures in Paradise, she ventured into American television as Dolores, starring Gardner McKay.
She was replaced in the Elvis Presley film Flaming Star in the same year by Barbara Eden following a disagreement with director Don Siegel. She portrayed as Phyllis in the episode of CBS ‘ Alfred Hitchcock Presents “Beta Delta Gamma” in 1961.
She also played an important role in the celebrated 81⁄2 of Federico Fellini in 1963 and appeared in the second episode of the season of NBC’s I Spy, “Spie Bridge”. Steele had main roles in multiple horror movies, including Black Sunday (1960), The Horrible Dr. Hichcock (1962), The Ghost (1963) directed by Riccardo Freda, The Long Hair of Death (1964) and Roger Corman’s 1961 adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe’s short story The Pit and the Pendulum, among others.
In Castle of Blood (1964), Terror-Creatures from Grave Castle and Nightmare Castle (both 1965) she was also cast in Curse of the Crimson Altar (1968).
