As the starting quarterback for the all-freshman squad until varsity quarterback Trey Polk broke his arm midway through the season, Minshew started playing football for Brandon High School in 2011.
The following year, Minshew assisted in leading the Brandon Bulldogs to the MHSAA 6A title game, where they fell to South Panola 31–23.
In the championship contest, Minshew had 223 passing yards and one touchdown. As a senior in 2014, he led the Bulldogs to an MHSAA state title victory with 3,541 passing yards and 31 touchdowns en route to the championship game.
